Firewalls and Security Certificates

Return to MEMBERS main page

As a part of our security system on the Freshly Pressed servers we have a firewall in place.

Most of the time you will not even know it is there, because it is not designed to keep ‘you’ out, but instead, is used to keep all of those nasty little script kiddies and other hacking types away.

If you do see it in action, it may in such instances as when you go to access such functions as your cPanel. And you will know this because your browser will popup with some kind of message asking you to accept a non-trusted certificate. Don’t panic at this point – it is a normal occurrence. The certificate is configured for individual use and not assigned to a specific IP address, company name or business, hence the message..

It is important that you allow the certificate to be accepted by your browser and for most, this means doing something which is known as adding an exception. If you inadvertently make a mistake and click on the wrong prompts here, you will need to actually go into your browser settings and add the certificate/exception, manually. An explanation follows

Adding an Exception [for those who were unable to add the exception on the first attempt]

There are too many different browsers and individual settings to outline the procedure for each and every one here, but we do provide a guide for two of the most popular browsers, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

FIREFOX:

1. Go to your top menu bar in your browser and click on TOOLS

2. Scroll down the menu tab and click on OPTIONS

3. At the top of the OPTIONS panel, click on the ADVANCED tab on the far right

4. Under the ADVANCED tab there are 4 more sub-tabs. Click on ENCRYPTION

5. In the ENCRYPTION panel click on the VIEW CERTIFICATES button

6. This will open a new panel called CERTIFICATE MANAGER. Click on the sub-tab called SERVERS.

7. This will show you a list of the certificates you allow on your browser. You need to check if your domain name is listed.

8. To access the cPanel for your domain it needs to be listed as yourdomain.com:2083. Example: freshlypressed.net:2083

9. If it is not listed you need to click on the ADD EXCEPTION button in the bottom right corner of this panel.

10. This will open another popup panel titled, ADD SECURITY EXCEPTION

11. In the LOCATION text box add your domain name ‘after’ the https:// – Example: https://freshlypressed.net:2083

12. Click on the GET CERTIFICATE button to the right of the text box.

13. This will then look for the certificate and will most likely shows messages such as: Wrong Site and Unknown Identity. Ignore these messages. They are safe and will cause no problems at all.

14. Make sure the PERMANENTLY STORE THIS EXCEPTION tick box is checked and then click on the CONFIRM SECURITY EXCEPTION button at the bottom of the panel.

15. Your domain should now be listed in the CERTIFICATES.

Now try to open your cPanel by going to http://yourdomain.com/cpanel – Example: http://freshlypressed.net/cpanel and it should now open with the login and password panel as normal.

INTERNET EXPLORER:

Internet Explorer will generally open a page with a message stating – ‘There is a problem with this website’s security certificate‘. If you want to quickly access your cPanel and cannot take the time to add a certificate at this point, you have the option to click on the option below this message which reads – ‘Continue to this website (not recommended)‘. This will allow the login popup box to appear and you can enter your details as normal.

If however, you would like to avoid seeing this message every time you try to access your cPanel, read on…

It varies according to your particular Internet Explorer version, but basically the procedure is as follows -

1. Go to your top menu bar in your browser and click on TOOLS

2. Scroll down the menu tab and click on INTERNET OPTIONS

3. Click on the SECURITY tab

4. Click on the TRUSTED SITES [the big green tick]

5. Click on the SITES button to the right of the new green tick that appears

6. Type http://*.yourdomainname into the text box at the top ‘Add this website to the zone‘ and uncheck the tickbox that says ‘Require server verification…‘. Click on the ADD button. Do not close – read the next step first.

7. Type https://*.yourdomainname into the text box at the top ‘Add this website to the zone‘ and check the tickbox that says ‘Require server verification…‘. Click on the ADD button.

In most instances this will prevent the message ‘There is a problem with this website’s security certificate‘ from appearing. However, if this does not work, your settings within your browser may also have an affect. Phishing filters and other factors also contribute and it is outside the scope of this guide to include every single scenario.
